Who are we?: For the past 85 years, Beyond Blindness has provided a range of services to South Australians who are blind or vision-impaired. Offering a variety of recreational activities, our mission is to promote independence, dignity and quality of life. Beyond Blindness also provides financial subsidies and grants. Our services are available to anyone aged over 18 years old who is legally blind and resides in South Australia. The cost for a Lifetime Membership is $25.

Associate Membership is available for: people with low vision (not legally blind), spouse, partner or immediate family of a full Beyond Blindness member, registered care giver or support person.

The cost of an Associate Membership is $25 annually.

Beyond Blindness Activities:
Beyond Blindness offers social activities across all of Adelaide and regional South Australia: North, South, East, West, Adelaide Hills, Gawler, Victor Harbor, Whyalla, Moonta and Mount Gambier.

Activities on offer: Craft, Bingo/Trivia, Bus excursions & day trips, Sports: Golf, Bowling, chair exercises, Tandem cycling, Swish table tennis, Talks/Information sessions, Walking groups, Dancing, Digital Training Programs, Cooking, Country Music Club, Pub lunches, Gawler Low Vision Group, Young Adults Group, Movies, Seniors games/Coffee & Chat, Victor Harbor/Goolwa Groups, Whyalla Group, Adelaide Hills Group, Overnight Trips to Regional SA, Conversation Corner, Book Club.

All members are welcome to attend any activity, in any location in Adelaide, depending on transport and resources availability.

Welcome to the Autumn 2026 edition of the Newsletter where you will be comprehensively updated on what Beyond Blindness has to offer. It’s lovely to have some much more comfortable weather and it’s started already, the footy season, where there is talk about how well or poorly a team has played. Good luck with your team. Board Report:
I trust that all Members had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year break and you are looking forward to an exciting year of Social and Recreational activities.

The Board met after the Christmas break to review our 5 Pillars that drive the Strategies to enable the ongoing services that we offer to you.

Below you will hear from Visa our General Manager and other Staff on future and continuing activities. During our deliberations we made the difficult decision to close the Gawler office and utilise the savings to expand our reach and offerings within the North and across the Adelaide Metropolitan area and our near country Members. We strive to ensure equity for all our Members this means that we carefully spend our limited funds wisely and in a sustainable manner.

As you are aware we do not receive Government funding and we have a fixed income base. Our Budget has now been formulated for the 2026/27 Financial year. However, like all professional organisations we must monitor and adjust where needed to live within our means.

Currently one of our cost centres Fuel and Bus Maintenance is being stretched with Diesel costing double since the Middle East War has begun with no end in sight. We have not yet considered restricting activities but depending on the impact to the budget we may need to review the situation. If you so wish you can contribute to your Transport cost to ease the situation .

Beyond Blindness

General Manager’s Report:
We had a good start to the year, with programs running well and a clear lift in Member participation across the Organisation. More importantly, it’s not just about numbers, it is about Members who are genuinely engaging, connecting, and enjoying what we are offering. The feedback has been clear: they value meaningful activities and are keen for more innovative and engaging programs.

We’ve responded by introducing a broader mix of experiences. Programs such as the Treasury Tunnels tour, Adelaide Gaol visit, and Wills & Estates information session were very well received across regions. In addition, activities like Op Shop tours, Cycling Without Age, have created strong engagement and connection among Members.

A noticeable shift this quarter is the strong preference for “out and about” activities. These programs are proving to be more engaging and accessible, while also increasing our visibility in the community. This is clearly the direction Members are valuing, and we are aligning our services accordingly.

Update on Gawler Office
As shared by the President, the decision to close the Gawler office at the end of the lease comes from a careful review of how we can better meet the needs of our members and deliver services in a more accessible and sustainable way. This decision was guided by one simple principle: value to Members.

While the office was set up to support the Outer North, usage has remained low, and the cost of maintaining the space is significant. Continuing in the same model would not be the best use of resources.

Instead, we are moving towards a more flexible approach, delivering activities across different community venues such as Salisbury and Para Hills, to name a few. Activities will commence from May, starting with weekly sessions at the Salisbury East Neighborhood Centre and the Para Hills Community Hub. As we go, we will continue to explore additional venues across the Outer North to ensure Members can easily access our services.

This is not a reduction in service, but it is a more practical and Member-focused way forward. We are also very conscious of the current environment, particularly rising travel and fuel costs. As we deliver more outreach-based programs, travel becomes essential, but it also needs to be managed carefully. Our focus is clear: every dollar spent must add value to Members.

I would like to sincerely thank our Staff and Volunteers for their continued dedication and support. Their time, care, and commitment play a vital role in making our programs successful and meaningful for our Members.

Around the Office:
Gawler Office Update: Following the update provided by the President and General Manager in this newsletter, Beyond Blindness is now progressing with the next phase of delivering activities across the Outer North in a more flexible and accessible way.

As part of this transition, Members can look forward to a continuation of both familiar and new activities across different community venues:

· Crafts will commence from Friday 1st May 2026, running weekly from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Salisbury East Neighbourhood Centre

· Bingo will begin from Monday 4th May 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Para Hills Community Hub

In addition, a range of activities and outings will continue to be held across various community centres in the Outer North, along with “out and about” programs designed to increase accessibility and participation.

Members are encouraged to refer to the Term 2 2026 calendar attached to this newsletter for full details of upcoming activities and dates.

Beyond Blindness is dedicated to supporting people who are blind or vision-impaired to live independent, dignified, and connected lives. The Organisation provides high quality welfare, advocacy, and support services, offering social activities, assistance programs, and representation to improve access to essential services. With a mission focused on enhancing quality of life, Beyond Blindness works to promote independence, community inclusion, and long-term wellbeing for its Members.

Life Member Benefits
As a Life Member of Beyond Blindness, you are part of a valued community that enjoys a wide range of exclusive benefits. These include financial subsidies, access to adaptive technology, personal loans, recreational funding, volunteer support services, and discounted accommodation. Our goal is to support your independence, wellbeing, and social connection through these tailored offerings.

Funding and Subsidies available to Life Members:
Adaptive Technology Subsidy
Supports members in acquiring adaptive technology to enhance independence. It covers 50% of eligible equipment costs, up to $4000, over 3 years. Devices must be designed for low vision use and not include general hardware like laptops. Members must not be receiving similar subsidies elsewhere. Quotes and receipts are required, and purchases must be approved beforehand.

Cost of Living Subsidy:
Replaces the Phone and Telephone Subsidy and simplifies the application process. Eligible Members receive either $300 or $180 annually, split into two payments. Income eligibility is reviewed biannually. A character reference is required, and support is available for completing the form.

Funeral Costs Subsidy:
Provides financial support of $500 to assist with funeral expenses for a Beyond Blindness Member, their spouse, or partner. Payment may be made to the Member, their spouse/partner, or next of kin depending on the situation.

Home Maintenance Cost Subsidy:
Provides up to $250 annually for qualified home maintenance services. Intended for Members on low income who have no other financial support. Only one subsidy can be claimed per year, and the work must be completed by a contractor with ABN.

Recreation & Personal Development Funding:
Supports members in accessing recreational activities not covered by MAC or NDIS. Offers up to $1000 annually, split into quarterly payments. Eligible activities include membership, lessons, and competitions. Health-related services like massage or grooming are excluded.

Personal Loan:
Members can apply for loans of up to $3,000 to cover personal expenses, with repayment terms ranging from 12 to 36 months. To qualify, Members must have held membership with Beyond Blindness for at least six months, provided the necessary financial documentation, and set up regular repayments. Only one loan may be active at any given time, and failure to meet repayment obligations may lead to the suspension of other member benefits.

Subsidised Stay at Oaks Liberty Suites:
Beyond Blindness owns a serviced 2-bedroom apartment at 1108 Colley Terrace, Glenelg, managed by the Oaks Group. Life Members can enjoy a short holiday at Glenelg at a subsidised rate of $200 for 3 nights, and $100 per additional night, up to 7 nights per calendar year.

Small Jobs Volunteer Service:
Life Members can access assistance with small household tasks through our volunteer service. This includes minor repairs, and other light duties to help maintain a safe and comfortable living environment.

Join Our Social Activities:
Beyond Blindness organises region-based social activities during both weekdays and weekends. These events are a wonderful opportunity to connect with others, build friendships, and enjoy shared experiences. We warmly invite you to participate and make the most of these gatherings.

We encourage all Life Members to download and use the Infoodle app to stay updated with the latest news, events, and services. If you’re unable to download it yourself, a family member or support person can do so on your behalf. It’s a great way to stay informed of the upcoming events.

See Differently with Royal Society for the Blind & Beyond Blindness Peer Support Program
The vision to imagine what’s possible!

Connect With Someone Who's Been There
Our Peer Support Program, which is a partnership between See Differently with the Royal Society for the Blind and Beyond Blindness, helps people with vision loss access and navigate services, build confidence and independence, and effectively advocate for their right to exercise choice and control over their lives, including the supports they receive.

We’ll connect you with trained peer supporters who have lived experience and have completed extensive training to ensure they’re fully equipped to offer the best possible support.

Anyone in South Australia experiencing sudden or deteriorating vision loss can join the Peer Support Program - no referral is required.

The sessions are free and will be held via telephone to ensure accessibility, regardless of location.

SA Music Hall of Fame Tour & Lunch
Presented by the City of Adelaide across two levels of Adelaide Town Hall, this exhibition celebrates Adelaide's 10-year milestone as Australia's only UNESCO City of Music in 2025. The Public Art department of City of Adelaide has kindly agreed to conduct a customised audio tour for our Members. iPhone and iPad - Get Started Voice Over Workshops
Apple conducts Workshops to familiarise users with accessibility features. We have booked a workshop for VoiceOver, especially for our Members. Apple’s support personnel will show you how to use basic gestures like swiping and tapping to navigate your device, adjust speaking rate, and customise VoiceOver in Settings. Bring your device for more meaningful interactive learning.

Nolton Park Horses Healing Hearts Visit: We have planned a special visit for Members to Nolton Park to visit the mini therapy horses and spend some time in the quiet and serene presence of these gentle and happy horses. Their manager has kindly arranged for Members to pet the horses, brush them down and lead them for a short walk. They have also kindly offered to provide morning tea comprising of tea, coffee and homemade muffins.

Nolton Park Healing Heart Horses is Australia’s largest miniature therapy horse charity. Each year, their tiny horses, Moet and Bella, visit over 20,000 adults and children in hospitals, hospices, and aged care facilities around Adelaide. “They offer a unique kind of comfort, even magic, in some of the toughest times.” They bring light, love, and joy during some of the worst moments in someone’s life, with the assistance of highly trained horses and volunteers. As like most outdoor tours and visits, participants will need to be able to walk independently and be comfortable walking for some distance.

Old Government House Tour
Step back to 1860 at Old Government House and discover the history of where early Governors were supposedly living. Come and see the first ever swimming pool! Nestled in beautiful Belair National Park, come listen to the historic significance of the building.

Please note that there are sloppy gravelled paths, narrow spaces, steps to manoeuvre from room to room. Therefore, we recommend that participants are confident to manage these constrains before registering. Or please bring a support worker to assist you. Travel Club - President’s Report by Wendy Carter
Hi everyone. I hope everyone had a lovely Summer, it's time for Autumn. The Cherry Farm in December was a success again, as usual, even though, there was a scare about a lack of cherries but this didn't end up being the case. Christmas lunch at Lobethal did not disappoint.

In February, it was the Adelaide Planetarium at Mawson Lakes - very interesting. I know everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, even the ones that couldn't see at all, as the audio commentary of everything was very descriptive.

Lunch at the Parafield Gardens Community Club was very very good. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the great food.

In March, we went to the Jungle in Willunga, which is a nursery just outside Willunga, down South. They have a coffee van there and seating for the ones that didn't want to go through the nursery. There is also a jungle with a boardwalk, where you could walk through and find all the different animals hiding in the under growth. The kids that were there on the day, were looking for all the animals and having a wonderful time. It's a great place to go for a family outing and very nice plants, to buy, as well.

Overnight Trips Report
Ballarat Trip Report by Wilma Evans:
We all had a great time at Ballarat. The highlight of the trip was Sovereign Hill. We were welcomed by a costumed guide who did a walking tour around Sovereign Hill and visited lots of shops and the old Post Office. Then we went to the gold pouring experience where we got to hold heavy gold. That night we also experienced the Aura sound and light show. Aura transformed Sovereign Hill into a moving theatre. The gritty story of gold along with rebellion, gunfights, triumphs and tragedies, which drew us into the drama of history. The Botanical Gardens and Lake Wendouree was another highlight. We also went to the Creswick Woollen Mill tour where we learnt about the history of the mill and all the equipment the mill used many years ago. They also had an animal farm there. The trip was enjoyed by all Members and Volunteers. For more information about future Overnight Trips, and to sign up, read the Term 2 calendar in this newsletter.

Oaks Apartment
Have you yet booked a stay at Beyond Blindness’ Glenelg Oaks Liberty Suites Apartment? This little piece of paradise allows Members to take a stay-cation at a self-contained, 2-bedroom apartment by the sea, at an affordable, discounted rate. One of our Members, Michelle, stayed at the Oaks recently and has kindly provided feedback about her experience:

We would like to remind everyone that there is still the risk of catching Covid and bringing it to Beyond Blindness activities and centres. For this reason, we kindly ask that you do not attend activities, volunteer, or come into the centres if you are sick, feel unwell, or have any cold, flu or respiratory symptoms. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your region’s Member Engagement Officer.

At our recent Annual Volunteer Celebrations, we had the honour of recognising several of our long serving Volunteers for their remarkable years of dedication to Beyond Blindness.

Our Volunteers give their time in so many valuable ways - driving, guiding people who are blind or who have low vision, supporting activities, preparing meals, and so much more. Their commitment makes a real difference in the lives of our Members every day. · Leonore has devoted 20 years of service to Beyond Blindness. Her commitment, leadership, and passion for supporting others have made a significant and enduring contribution to our organisation.

· Wendy has volunteered with Beyond Blindness for 15 years, giving her time, energy, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of our Members. Her efforts have greatly enhanced community participation and opened doors to experiences that may not have been possible without her commitment.

National Volunteer Week will be held this year from 18th - 24th May, and the UN General Assembly has designated 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.

To celebrate the incredible volunteers who generously give their time and skills to Beyond Blindness, we will be hosting a Volunteer Thank You Morning Tea on Friday 22nd May 2026 at the Campbelltown Office. Volunteers, keep an eye out in your email inbox for your invitation and further details.

To: Barossa, SA.
31st August - 4th September 2026

Discover the Barossa and beyond! Join us for a wonderful five day getaway to the beautiful Barossa and surrounding regions. This relaxing trip has been specially planned to give Members plenty of time to explore, socialise and enjoy some of South Australia’s most picturesque locations.

It’s also a great introduction for Members who haven’t joined one of our overnight trips before, offering the chance to experience the fun, companionship and supportive environment that our trips are known for. During the five days we will explore charming country towns, and local attractions and beautiful landscapes, while enjoying good food, great company and comfortable accommodation. Our friendly volunteers will be there every step of their way to ensure everyone has a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience.

If you’ve been thinking about joining one of our trips, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try. Come along, relax, explore, and make wonderful memories with friends, old and new.

Registrations deadline for Barossa Trip is: 3rd July 2026.
Final payment due: 3rd August 2026.

NOTE: We have changed the process slightly. From now on we will have a cut off date for registering your interest. After that date the invoices will be issued with a week to pay the non-refundable deposit. The remaining payment will need to be made 4 weeks before the trip.

· Some activities may have fees involved

· Transport may be provided for members living within predetermined radius. For members who are living outside of the radius, alternative central pick-up locations can be arranged, subject to availability

· Regular activities may take a break during the school holiday period – please refer to the activity calendar for details

· Contact the appropriate regional Member Engagement Officer for any clarification about activities during the holidays or any general questions.
